Play Safely

Free to enter is not the same as free of risk. The tools that work, and the signs worth acting on.

Why this page belongs on a free-play site

No purchase is required to play sweepstakes games, which makes the model sound harmless. The mechanics are identical to any casino game though: variable rewards, near misses, and a coin pack one click away the moment a free balance empties. That last part is where the risk lives. Most people who spent more than they intended on a sweepstakes site never planned to spend anything at all.

Signs worth acting on

  • Buying a coin pack after deciding you would only use the free routes.
  • Sessions running longer than you intended, or losing track of the time entirely.
  • Chasing a redemption floor when the games have stopped being fun.
  • Keeping the time or money spent from people close to you.
  • Feeling restless or irritable when you cannot play.

Tools every operator here provides

All eighteen sites we funded offer at least the following in account settings. They take a minute to switch on and using them is not an admission of anything.

  • Purchase limits. A hard cap per day, week or month. On a sweepstakes account this is the single most effective control.
  • Session reminders. A prompt at an interval you set. More useful in practice than it sounds.
  • Cool off. A short lock from a day to a month, after which the account reopens on its own.
  • Self exclusion. A long or permanent closure. Request it in writing and keep the reply.
Free, confidential help in the US. The National Council on Problem Gambling runs a 24 hour helpline on 1-800-GAMBLER, with chat and text at ncpgambling.org. Gamblers Anonymous meets in person and online at gamblersanonymous.org, and Gam-Anon supports family members.

Worried about someone else

Talk about the behaviour rather than the person, do not cover debts, and point them at the helpline rather than trying to manage it alone. Gam-Anon exists for exactly this position.

Under eighteen

These games are for adults only, eighteen or twenty-one depending on operator and state. If a young person shares your device, the parental controls built into your operating system are worth ten minutes.
